for the love of kanye

My husband is as big a Stan for Kanye West as I am for Beyonce so he was super excited on Saturday. The concert was being hosted by Castle Lite and the dress code was all white and about 90% of the people who came actually wore white, if you ever want to stand out in a crowd , wear colour to an all white party! For the first time the VIP area was actually within the Golden Circle area plus they had chairs to sit on, it seemed really cool. The screens were massive, awesome for us short people, we didn’t have to stand on our tippy toes to see Kanye. When we arrived Ms Cosmo was on the decks, then there were performances by Tumi from the Volume, HHP, Tokollo & Zakwe. There was a surprise guest which turned out to be AKA, it was my first time seeing him perform and he was pretty good, although the hype of a surprise guest led me to think it would be an international artist, even DBanj would have justified the hype.

This concert had all the potential to be the best concert I had ever been to, and I have been to a lot, had we not waited for Kanye for so long. The concert started at 17:30 and Kanye only came on at 23:19, it was a pretty long wait, it felt like forever!! The worst thing is that we were standing the entire time and there were no stands in the Dome so there was nowhere to sit. The girls that were wearing heels were in so much pain, I was wearing flats and my feet were aching. Apparently the bar which was only selling Brutal Fruit and Castle Lite ran out of drinks which got people even more agitated. Pearl Thusi, Sizwe Dhlomo, Loyiso Gola and Gareth Cliff were the hosts of the show and every time they came on after 21:30 people started booing them and what made it worse was that they kept promising that Kanye would be on soon. People were tweeting all their frustration to the Castle Lite twitter handle and they were screening them in between performances, they eventually stopped screening them because the tweets were so negative.

When Kanye eventually came on, he was amazing. He performed on his own the entire time and the massive screens were great visuals, he wore weird stuff like a straight jacket & a diamond mask, it was all Kanye weird. Unfortunately some people had just had enough and were leaving during Kanye’s performance. Despite all the things that went wrong, I had fun because I was in good company with my husband’s friends and their wives and girlfriends. We can only hope that Castle Lite takes the feedback from the tweets and brings us Beyonce next time!
